At Rudner Law, we only practice in the area of Employment Law (although it is sometimes referred to as HR Law or Workplace Law).
We recognize that the employment relationship is an interpersonal one, not unlike a marriage, and that it is a critical part of your life. That is true whether we are talking about a multi-national corporation, an owner-operated startup, a family business or a not-for-profit organization. And interpersonal relationships are complicated. We are talking about your livelihood, your business, and the place where you spend most of your day. You want to be sure that you understand your rights and obligations. That’s where we come in.
We are passionate about helping our clients and work with them at all stages of the employment relationship.
Our approach is simple. We want to understand your circumstances, your concerns, and your goals. We will then ensure that you understand the legal regime along with your rights and obligations. Once that is done, we work with you to design a cost-effective strategy that meets your needs. We want to be your trusted advisor.
We advise our clients and advocate on their behalf. We work with them to prevent issues, but when they can’t be avoided, we are zealous advocates, whether it is in the context of negotiation or litigation.
Since we work with employers and employees, and we also act as neutrals, we can look at any situation from every perspective. We can credibly anticipate what “the other side” might think, or how they will respond, and advise you on the best way to proceed.

We know that legal fees can be expensive, and many people are scared of what calling a lawyer will cost them. That’s normal, but the worst thing you can do is proceed without proper advice, allowing small issues to grow into big ones; it always costs more to fix a problem than to prevent it.
We like to find ways to provide cost certainty and predictability. When possible, we bill on a fixed-fee basis. We also offer employers a monthly retainer option. And if we are billing based on time, we will maintain regular contact with you so that there can be a cost-benefit analysis at every stage.
Meeting With Us
We are based in Markham, Ontario, a growing part of the Greater Toronto Area with over 400 corporate head offices and more than 1,100 high tech and life science companies. We are located near Highways 407, 404, 401 and 7, and we offer free parking.
We also have access to meeting space in downtown Toronto, across the GTA and throughout North America, and we work with clients around the world.
We always like to meet clients in person when we start working with them, unless it is simply not feasible (we have clients as far away as Asia). However, the reality is that after the initial meeting, most of our communications with clients are by phone and email.
We make use of technology to facilitate the relationship: we use G Suite to share documents so we can collaborate on them rather than sending drafts back and forth, and we use video conference solutions like Skype or Zoom when something in between an in-person meeting and a phone call is appropriate.
No law firm can be completely paperless, but we are pretty close. All of our files are stored electronically, which makes it easy for us to access your file no matter where we are, and to share documents securely with our clients. For more information, click here.
